Situ

A prototype for my PhD research-creation project. It asks whether Griffintown's spatial culture and urban rhythm can be mediated and archived through a game-like 3D experience, built one small system at a time from the city's open data and from observation.

Each system has one job. I test it and try it in the Lab, an interactive map of every system, before the next system may use it.

  • About Situ

Method

Space syntax, a way of measuring how a street network is arranged, is one of my measuring sticks, beside the city's own counts. The simulated people will never read it. I will compare where they go with what it predicts, street by street.

Integration measures how easy a street is to get to. Choice measures how often it lies on the way between other places.

  • Why I use it

Data

One walking network for the whole island: the city's streets joined with the off-street paths people use.

47,197 lines

I removed highways and unbuilt streets and added 161 km of the city's own off-street paths.

Lab

Every system on one map, one at a time. Try each one and see the places I still need to check. Click anything for its details.

The Lab replays what each system wrote down. Its own tests check that it shows those results exactly.
